Staff/Parent Representative Elections

We are pleased to inform staff and parents of the opportunity to become involved in the management and development of vocational education in Galway City.

As a parent or as a member of staff, you are invited to stand for election or to nominate a person of your choice for election to the Committee of the City of Galway VEC. You are also entitled to vote for the candidate of your choice for election to the Committee of the City of Galway VEC.

The membership of the Committee of Vocational Education Committees is as follows:

Core Committee:

Plus:

  • 4 community representatives (2 male, 2 female) (appointed after the Core Committee is in place - all applications/enquires to Galway City Council - 091536400)

Eligibility:

  1. Parents of any student who has not reached the age of 18 years on 30th September 2009 and who is registered as a student at recognised schools established or maintained by the VEC.
  2. Staff who are on a contract of service on 30th September 2009.
  3. Staff who do not have a contract of service on 30th September 2009 but who gave service on that date for which service remuneration is payable.
  4. Casual part-time teachers must be present on 30th September 2009 to be eligible.


To Register:  Check at your local school / education centre to ensure that your name is on the electoral register.  Draft Registers of Electors for Parents and Staff will be available at your local school/education centre from 9th – 16th October, 2009

To Nominate: A person shall not be nominated as a candidate for election or have his or her nomination withdrawn, without his or her written consent.

Each candidate must be nominated by means of a nomination form.

Each candidate’s nomination form must be signed by not less than 5 eligible electors, whose names are entered on the electoral register for the constituency for which the candidate is nominated and who have not signed the nomination form of another nominee.

The nomination form (samples below), for each of the parent and staff elections, must be completed by the nominee and nominators in the presence of the Returning Officer or Deputy Returning Officer. The nominee and nominators must produce suitable identification i.e. driving licence etc.

Nominees must present themselves to the Returning Officer/Deputy Returning Officer, at the City of Galway VEC HQ, with their nominators between the times stated below only:

Monday, 19th October 2009  from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Tuesday, 20th October 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon)

Where the number of duly nominated candidates for an electoral roll is equal to or less than the number of members to be elected for that electoral roll, the returning officer shall declare those candidates to be elected.

Where in respect of an electoral roll the number of duly nominated candidates exceeds the number of members to be elected for that electoral roll, a poll shall be taken by the returning officer. Elections to be held on 6th November at a CGVEC school/centre yet to be announced.

In the interest of data protection and security, the City of Galway Vocational Education Committee will not be posting listings of names and addresses on its public website; these are available in hardcopy format on notice boards in schools/centres.
