Adult Refugee Programme (ARP)

The City of Galway VEC began working with the Adult Refugee programme since the 18th of August, 2008. The three original groups had attended the former Integrate Ireland Language and Training (IILT) programme and most of these students remained with us until August 2009.

Three new groups began in September 2009. Most students come from South America, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. As all of the students have been in Ireland for a few years – they are not programme refugees, but have gone through the asylum seeking process – the need for ‘socialization’ is not as great as is found in ‘orientation programmes’. The programme therefore has a concentrated language development format - the students take FETAC levels 3, 4 and 5. Our aim is that most of the students should be proficient enough in English to integrate comfortably both in the workplace and in the community by the end of the year of study.

As part of the programme students also take two levels of FETAC computer studies and a FETAC module in Interculturalism.  They take part in local events (open days, etc) and have gone on visits to museums and other places of interest.
