3% Employment Target

The Disability Act, 2005 makes it a legal requirement for all public bodies to employ a minimum of 3% of people with disabilities.

The definition of disability to be used in relation to the 3% target is set out in the Disability Act 2005:

"Disability, in relation to a person, means a substantial restriction in the capacity of the person to carry on a profession, business or occupation in the State or to participate in social or cultural life in the State by reason of an enduring physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual impairment"

The City of Galway VEC is committed to achieving this 3% target. A survey carried out in late 2007 confirmed that we are currently employing just over 3%.

We are currently devising a new code of practice for the employment of people with disabilities. The new code of practice will aim to reduce or eliminate employment barriers faced by people with disabilities wishing to work in the VEC.
