Training Courses for Job Seekers
Released: 09 August 2010
Galway Adult Basic Education Service (City of Galway VEC) has been awarded funding from the Department of Education and Skills (DES) Labour Activation Fund to run three 9 month-long education and training courses for those currently on Job-Seekers Allowance. The objective is to broaden the labour possibilities of the trainees – either to obtain work in new green industry or to set up in self-employed business in the specific craft areas or linking all the crafts and green awareness to work in residential repair and maintenance and in projects that are associated with the National Development Plan. By the end of the course candidates will have taken three modules in Metalwork, Glasswork and Woodwork and a further three in Renewable Energy, Green Building and Sustainable Development Level.
The courses are targeted at adults who have worked in those industries which have been most affected by the recession - the construction, retail and hostelry sectors. Many such workers will have either left school early before mastering the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics or will have come to Ireland from abroad with very basic English. These general skills will also be covered on the course and trainees will be given the opportunity to progress from levels 3 to 5 FETAC. There will also be a module on Setting up a Small Business to assist the trainees to proceed in this direction if they so wish, and modules on team working and preparation for work. Finally, given that computers have become a part of every industry, three modules in information technology will be offered. These will take the trainee from a basic knowledge to full competence.
The courses will begin on the 20th of September and will run until the middle of June 2011. There will a total of 25 hours per week. All trainees will go on work placement in March 2011.
To be eligible for the course, candidates must be on Job Seeker’s Allowance for 3 months. This allowance will continue for the duration of the course.
